The Black Hammered Cup Rain Chain is a decorative downspout alternative that guides rainwater from your gutter to the ground through a cascade of textured cups. Each square, tapered cup has a hand-hammered pattern that catches the light and turns every rainfall into a soft, splashing water feature, ideal for patios, garden paths, balconies, entryways and any spot where a standard downspout looks out of place.

Why choose a rain chain instead of a downspout?

  • Directs water where you want it. Water travels cup to cup down the chain instead of spilling off the gutter edge, helping protect walkways, plant beds and the foundation from splash-back.
  • Looks great rain or shine. The black hammered cups add architectural detail to the home's exterior even on dry days.
  • Turns rain into a water feature. The gentle sound and motion of water flowing through the cups works well beside seating areas, courtyards and gardens.
  • Pairs with rain harvesting. Run the chain into a basin, gravel bed, rain barrel or rainwater collection box to capture and reuse water.

How to install a rain chain

  1. Remove the downspout and elbows from the gutter outlet, or add a new outlet where you want the chain to hang. We stock 3" x 4" oval drop outlets and 3" x 4" rectangular outlets.
  2. Secure the top link of the chain across the outlet opening with a rain chain bracket or a strap placed over the hole so the chain hangs straight down the center of the outlet.
  3. Let the chain hang freely to the ground. Anchor the bottom in a basin, splash block or gravel bed, or stake it so wind doesn't swing it into the wall.
  4. Seal any old fastener holes and outlet edges with white gutter sealant.

Complete the gutter system

A rain chain works best on clean, well-supported gutters. Keep leaves out of the cups with K-Style gutter guards, support the run with 6" hidden hangers with clip or 7" hangers with clip, and finish the ends with 6" K-style end caps. For runs where you still need a traditional drain, use our 3" x 4" aluminum downspouts with Elbow A and Elbow B. Browse all gutter outlets and popular gutter accessories.

Rain chain FAQ

What is a rain chain?

A rain chain is a series of linked cups or links that hangs from a gutter outlet in place of a closed downspout. Rainwater flows down the outside of the chain from cup to cup to the ground, where it can be collected or drained away.

How long is this rain chain?

This rain chain measures 129.5 cm (50.98 in), about 4.25 ft, from the top link to the teardrop end. Each cup is 2.95 in wide and 2.75 in tall.

Can a rain chain replace a downspout?

Yes. A rain chain hangs from the same gutter outlet opening as a downspout. Rain chains handle normal rainfall well; on very large roof areas or in heavy Florida downpours, some water may splash off the cups, so place the chain over a basin, gravel bed or splash area.

Where should I hang a rain chain?

Popular spots include patios, balconies, porches, garden paths and entryways, anywhere you want rain to become a visible feature rather than disappear into a pipe.

Do I need gutter guards with a rain chain?

They are recommended. Gutter guards keep leaves and debris from washing into the cups, so water flows cleanly down the chain.
